Follow the trail. Ants lay scent trails between the nest and a food source, so a line of ants leads in one direction to the food and the other toward the nest or entry point.
A visible ant trail is a map. Workers follow scent trails between the colony and the food, so if you trace the line patiently it leads toward the entry point and, often, the nest - along baseboards, up walls, behind cabinets, or out a gap in the foundation.
Where the trail disappears into a wall, under a sink, or out an exterior gap tells you the entry. Carpenter ants add a clue: small piles of sawdust-like frass point to a nest excavated in wood, which usually means a moisture problem nearby.
Resist wiping the trail away before you have traced it, since the scent line is what lets you find the source. And avoid a contact spray on the trail - it scatters the colony and can split it into several. The reliable fix is following the trail to the source and baiting the colony there.
This is part of our ant control service across the Manassas and Northern Virginia area.
Contact spray kills the workers you see and scatters the rest, which can split one colony into several. Baiting the colony at the source is what clears it.
Seal the entry points, remove the food draw, and treat the colony at the source. A recurring plan keeps the perimeter protected year-round.
